the netherlands
The Netherlands is a small European country that shares a border with Belgium and Germany. The country is known for its flat landscapes, windmills, tulip fields and vast network of canals. With the exception of the tulip fields, which you won’t see very often, I have the impression that the country lives up to its clichés. The Netherlands is famous for its bicycle culture, lively cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and rich cultural heritage. Make the most of your stay and soak up the vibrant yet peaceful atmosphere!

APPS TO DOWNLOAD
The right applications can make your travels so much easier.
In the Netherlands, and as in most European countries, they use Google applications a lot for GPS navigation and translation.
9292 : Public and Private transportation navigation
This online platform/application lets you check public and private transport journeys. It’s great because it’s updated, so if trains are late or cancelled, you’ll be informed on the app. What’s more, it suggests alternatives. I think it’s better than Google map if you need to get around by transport, but feel free to try it out for yourself. Also, you can buy tickets for public transport on the app.
Buienradar : Rain radar
Dutch weather is particular. From autumn to spring, it is usually cold and rainy. This app shows you when/where rainstorms will appear, which is very useful! Especially if you use a bike.
Tikkie : Online payment
Dutch people use it a lot. It is great to reimburse your friend through a simple message!
TRANSPORTATION (OV-Chipkaart)
To use public transportation in the Netherlands, you can by ticket or use the OV-Chipkaart.
To use the OV-Chipkaart, you need to check-in and check-out at the beginning and end of each journey. The cost of your journey is automatically deducted from the balance on your OV-Chipkaart. It is important to ensure that you have sufficient balance on your card before traveling!
The OV-Chipkaart can be topped up with credit at ticket machines located at train stations, or online through the OV-Chipkaart website.
There are different types of OV-Chipkaart available: anonymous cards and personalized cards. Anonymous cards can be used by multiple people, while personalized cards are registered to a specific individual. Both are like 7,50€, you will have to wait approximately a week to receive the personal one.
The OV-Chipkaart can be used for various modes of public transportation, including trains, buses, trams, and metros. It is also possible to use the OV-Chipkaart for other services, such as bike rentals and parking.
You can check online on the ov-chipkaart website how much you have on your card and the journeys you did!
If you are a visitor to the Netherlands, you can purchase a disposable OV-Chipkaart for temporary use!
Remember to always check-in and check-out properly to ensure correct fare calculation and to avoid fines.
101 culture and language
Dutch people are extremely good in english, almost everybody speaks it. However, it is always nice to learn a few words when you travel!
Words to know :
- Hello → Hallo / Can use it in shops, restaurant, buses…
- Goodbye → Tot ziens
- Thank you → Dank u / All situations
- Yes → Ja (ya)
- No → Nee
- I am [your name] → Ik ben Beyonce
- Gezellig → dutch word to describe a feeling of well being, or just to say great
- Lekker → to say a food or situation is nice
The Netherlands is LGBTQIA+ friendly!
Dutch are friendly and direct people. They value directness and honesty, which is really nice when talking with them. You won’t have to read between the lines because everything is said.
If you go out with Dutch people you will share the bill equally, even for the little things.
If you are in the Netherlands on 27th April, celebrate King’s Day (the birthday of their king). The whole country celebrates it!
Bikes are not only a cliché, they are used a lot, at any time, and in any situation.
VISA
If you are planning to visit the Netherlands, it is important to check if you require a visa. The visa requirements vary depending on your nationality and the purpose of your visit.
For citizens of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland, no visa is required to enter the Netherlands. They can freely travel and stay in the country for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
For citizens of other countries, a visa may be required. The type of visa will depend on the duration and purpose of your visit. There are different categories of visas, including tourist visas, business visas, and student visas.
To apply for a visa, you will need to submit the required documents, such as a valid passport, proof of accommodation, proof of financial means, travel itinerary, and possibly a letter of invitation or sponsorship. It is recommended to apply for the visa well in advance of your planned trip.
It is important to note that visa requirements and processes can change, so it is advisable to check the official website of the Netherlands embassy or consulate in your country for the most up-to-date information.
